Matthew 17:4-8

Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. - Matthew 17:4-8

Dear Jesus,

If I were to see you in all your glory and hear your Father's voice thunder from heaven, I'd be on the ground next to Peter, James and John, terrified. There's just something about encountering you that makes me starkly aware of my sin. It's equally overwhelming for me to see what you did for those three men, while they were trembling face down. You gently touched them and told them not to be afraid. You could and should condemn us but instead you touch us and forgive us through your own death for us. You are the only true God who will judge the whole earth but you have judged yourself first in our place so you can have us back. Why would you want us? But you do! I am yours Jesus. Help me to see no one today except you while I'm coming down from the mountain to live my life in your world.

Amen

A truth that brings peace: Jesus will someday judge all people, but he has forgiven us first in love.
