James 5:12

James 5_12.jpg

Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned. – James 5:12

Dear Jesus,

The root of this sin and the forbiddance of vows is that it’s our nature to think we are in control and can guarantee results.  We do not even know if we will be alive tomorrow, much less fulfill our promises. Help me to take my hands off the wheel of my life and let you drive. I live in your world and was created for your purposes. I have plans, hopes and dreams but they do not mean anything if they exist outside of your will.  I cannot control all the events and people around me to make them happen either.  I want the peace of knowing you are in control and the simplicity that comes from letting go.  I will do what I know I am supposed to do and simply say “yes” and “no” when people ask for me to plan with them, knowing full well that you can change everything for both of us in the twinkling of an eye.

Amen

Pastor Don Patterson

Life is way more fun lived out from under the need to be in control.
